My office is located at 1399 South 700 East, #11 Salt Lake City, UT 84105. I see people in person or via teletherapy.
Qualifications: I received my Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) from the University of Georgia. I am a licensed MFT and an Approved Supervisor and Fellow of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy. As a university faculty member, I helped start an MFT masters program at North Dakota State University, then was hired and became a faculty member of the student counseling center at Brigham Young University. There, I was a confidential therapist for students, and a supervisor for graduate students training to become therapists. I also had the responsibility to train graduate psychology interns in couples therapy. I recently left BYU to be able to give full focus to my private practice and have more freedom to work with people of various backgrounds and experiences.
Working with Me:
I have a range of therapy orientations, depending on the needs of my clients. I tend to draw from: Interpersonal and Person-Centered psychology, Emotionally Focused Therapy and Attachment Theory, Family Systems and theories of self-differentiation, ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), and Mindfulness-based therapies. I genuinely feel so fortunate to have chosen the field of psychology as my profession, it continues to be a great fit for me. The relationship you have with your therapist has been demonstrated over and over to be the #1 factor in determining the effectiveness of therapy. So, I place emphasis on being non-judgmental, open, listening, validating, and offering feedback that is unique to each of my clients as I get to know them.
I recently was given the feedback by a new client that he experienced my style as “collaborative and warm.” That was a great compliment, because I strive to provide a safe, confidential, and caring environment, as well as a challenging one to help you reduce suffering and enhance your life.
Some Things About Me: I am oriented to the outdoors, and have great passions for solo and small group hiking, backpacking, wilderness camping, and making fire. I love 4 seasons living, and am snowboarding in the winters and canyoneering and desert-hiking in the spring and fall. I have been a student of Zen Buddhism since 2006 and make my way to meditation retreats each year. I enjoy movie discussions, and reading, especially poetry.
