About Dallas
Hello! I’m glad you decided to look for help.
You’re here because in one way or another right now you’re struggling. You’re not alone. And you definitely don’t have to navigate your ‘stuff’ alone. As humans we ALL have stuff at one time or another, and sometimes it comes in ways that are just too much for our usual ways of dealing. That does NOT make you defective, weak, or less-than…it makes you human. And I can help you.
I specialize in these areas:
- Faith transitions and the various mental health challenges they can bring on
- Anxiety-based problems, and a tendency toward overthinking and being stuck in your head
- Developing skills to enhance psychological well-being
I work well with people who have a hard time knowing how to talk about what they’re feeling. I also click well with ‘thinky’ people. By which I mean people who usually are able to think themselves through most of what life throws at them, but have encountered something where not only is more thinking unhelpful, it may even be making things worse.
My training background includes a Masters degree in Counseling, and a PhD in Counseling Psychology, both from accredited institutions. I first started working with clients in therapy over 20 years ago. I have been an Associate Clinical Director at a large college counseling center, and have published and presented research related to therapy. I stay scientifically informed in my professional services. Over the course of a decade, I developed and established a successful university course designed to enhance psychological well-being. I understand that qualifications don’t necessarily mean much, but want you to at least be reassured that they amount to my being prepared and capable.
So what does therapy with me look like? If you’re familiar at all with therapy approaches, you’ll notice me primarily utilizing Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), Existential Therapy, Client-Centered Therapy, and some positive psychology skills when appropriate. If those mean nothing to you, that’s okay too…these are just frameworks that can guide our work together if we both feel good about utilizing them.
Ultimately, the quality of our working connection is far more important than techniques. Whether your particular struggle is related to moving away from long-held beliefs, dealing with a busy, ruminating mind, feeling overwhelmed by pain, or anything else…if you don’t first feel understood, safe, and free to be fully open, then the best techniques in the world won’t be effective. My style is less directive and more focused on involving you in your own therapy. My goal is to help you understand yourself and your values enough to successfully move past the obstacles in the way of becoming the person YOU want to be.
You’re likely to see my dry, sarcastic humor, my emphasis on pragmatic realism, and my gentle way of pushing and prodding when needed. If you’re sensing that I might be a good fit for you, feel free to contact me.
